Tintagel Castle: The Birthplace of the Legend of King Arthur

Like most of our day trips, we hadn’t really planned where we were going to go or what we would visit, simply picking a town in an area that’s renowned for its awesome coastal scenery and with free parking nearby we came across some interesting places to visit.

Situated alongside the SW Coast Path and roughly 600 meters from the town of Tintagel, the Island Castle of Tintagel is now mostly a ruin with few of the original structures still intact. However, it is the legendary birthplace of King Arthur that draws visitors from all over the world.

Exploring Tintagel Castle

As we approached Tintagel Castle, we were immediately struck by its dramatic location. Perched on a rocky island connected to the mainland by a narrow bridge, the castle offers breathtaking views of the rugged coastline and the crashing waves below. It truly feels like stepping into a medieval fantasy.

Visitors can explore the ruins of the castle at their own pace. From the Great Hall to the Chapel, each area has its own story to tell. As we wandered through the ancient walls, we couldn't help but imagine the grandeur and mystery that once filled these halls.

One of the highlights of our visit was climbing to the top of the island. The panoramic views from the highest point were absolutely stunning.
