While spending a year living in Kununurra, which is located in North Western Australia, we travelled to many different areas in this awesome region .
Located on the Eastern side of the Kimberley region roughly 40km from the border with the Northern Territory, it has Lake Argyle, the Bungle Bungles, Home Valley Station, El Questro Station all relatively nearby and the Ord river running past, there are many many more places to visit and enjoy but will save them for another post.
The town’s population hovers around 10,000, but can drop by a few thousand during the wet season.
It’s a remote town with the nearest city being Darwin at just over 800km away and Perth at around 3200km, during wet season it regularly gets cut off with roads being flooded over for several days or more, the thunder storms can be amazing (unfortunately we didn’t manage to get any photo’s)
In the past the Boab tree would be hollowed out and used as a prison.
We took a scenic flight over Kununurra, Lake Argyle and the Bungle Bungles on our first trip to the area before we moved there for a year.
The plane we went up in .
A look at the agricultural area, which is slowly being expanded and produces a large amount of food each year
The Bungle Bungles from the air
Lake Argyle which can hold more than 13 times the volume of water thats in Sydney harbour.
Back on the ground we covered hundreds of kilometers on foot, exploring all the rivers and rock formations with our 2 kids, our daughter was 3 then and refused to be carried walking everywhere without a complaint.
We drove along many a dusty bumpy road in our trusty Landrover Discovery and it never missed a beat
