Nemo Science Museum, Amsterdam
Canal bridge to the museum
After a few days going around Amsterdam in what ended up being a cold and extremely windy weekend we needed to take the kids somewhere warm, indoors and with space for them to play, so decided to visit the Nemo Science Museum (no connection to the Disney Nemo).
The building stands out on the canals
We happened to pick the weekend to visit and the place was packed making it hard to get to some of the exhibits, though we should have realised this given we normally avoid these types of places on weekends.
The building has a unique design and points to the sky, with the outside cladding slowly changing colour as it’s exposed to the elements
Exhibition zone
Regular displays to entertain all, though if your not on or near the ground floor you can’t hear what is being said
With the exhibits set out over several different floors covering many areas of science and engineering, we had a few hours of fun wandering between them with the kids desperate to try out everything
There are lots of hands-on exhibits each with information about how they work and how they are used in our day to day lives. Though the kids were too busy playing with them to read about the science involved in their creation.
There’s an area where the kids were able to try out different experiments and record their results while dressed up in lab coats and eyeware.
If you just want a good view and a something to eat you can go up to the cafe on the roof and have a bite, there’s also some science stuff for the kids to play with for free, it’s accessible via a staircase on the side or a lift from the science centre lobby.
Visiting is expensive at 70 Euros (approx $110 AUD) for all four of us for around four hours of entertainment, we found that most things in Amsterdam are overpriced though we did manage to find some bargains that we’ll talk about in our next Amsterdam articles, we had a packed few days, enjoying as much of it as we could.
