Victoria’s Scenic Highway

After completing a few weeks of work near Warragul, east of Melbourne, my family and I decided to embark on a memorable trip before our upcoming overseas travels. Little did we know that this trip would take us all the way to Exmouth in North Western Australia, spanning over 10,000km and several months of adventure.

Our journey began on the iconic Great Ocean Road, a scenic highway that stretches along the stunning coastline of Victoria. This road is renowned for its breathtaking views, charming coastal towns, and iconic landmarks, making it a must-visit destination for any traveler.

As we set off from Melbourne, we were immediately captivated by the beauty of the rugged coastline and the crashing waves. The Great Ocean Road offers endless opportunities for exploration, with numerous lookout points and walking trails along the way.

Our first stop was the Twelve Apostles, a collection of limestone stacks that rise majestically from the Southern Ocean. These natural wonders are a sight to behold, especially during sunrise or sunset when the golden light illuminates the towering formations. We spent hours marveling at the beauty of nature and capturing the perfect photographs.

Continuing our journey, we came across the London Arch, formerly known as the London Bridge. This unique rock formation was once a double-span natural bridge before one of the spans collapsed. Despite the change, it remains a remarkable sight and a testament to the power of erosion.

One of the highlights of our trip was exploring the coastal walk that leads to the Grotto. This enchanting cave-like formation is nestled amidst the cliffs and offers a serene and picturesque setting. We took our time to admire the crystal-clear waters and the natural beauty that surrounded us.

As we continued along the Great Ocean Road, we couldn't resist stopping at the charming coastal towns that dotted the route. Warnambool, with its historic buildings and vibrant art scene, provided a delightful break from the road. We enjoyed strolling along the promenade, indulging in local cuisine, and immersing ourselves in the laid-back coastal lifestyle.

Another gem along the Great Ocean Road is the Surf Coast Highway, which takes you through some of Australia's best surf spots. As avid surfers, we couldn't pass up the opportunity to catch some waves at Bells Beach, famous for its powerful swells and world-class surf competitions.

Our journey along the Surf Coast Highway also led us to the iconic town of Torquay, known as the birthplace of Australian surfing. Here, we explored the Surf World Museum, which showcases the rich history and culture of surfing in Australia. It was fascinating to learn about the pioneers of the sport and see vintage surfboards and memorabilia.

As we ventured further along the Surf Coast Highway, we discovered hidden beaches and secluded coves that offered the perfect escape from the crowds. The pristine stretches of sand and the crystal-clear waters beckoned us to relax and soak up the sun.

Our road trip eventually came to an end in Exmouth, North Western Australia, where we were greeted by the stunning turquoise waters of the Ningaloo Reef. This World Heritage-listed site is a haven for snorkelers and divers, with an abundance of marine life and colorful coral reefs.

Our journey along the Great Ocean Road and Surf Coast Highway was an unforgettable adventure filled with natural wonders, charming towns, and exhilarating surf breaks. It allowed us to immerse ourselves in the beauty of Australia's coastline and create lasting memories as a family.

If you're planning a trip to Victoria, make sure to include the Great Ocean Road and Surf Coast Highway in your itinerary. Whether you're a nature lover, a surf enthusiast, or simply seeking a scenic drive, these iconic highways will not disappoint.
